| Subject: Of course it's hard to comprehend. It's art. That's not said in its defense. I don't happen to think it's very good art. I'm just saying that anybody who thinks they can read this piece like a simple comedy bit is not reading it very deeply. Or am I mistaken? Is it as shallow as its defenders seem to think? I thought this bit was difficult to handle 30 yrs ago on whatever album that was, and it's more difficult in the present re-enactment, partly because the production is of such lower quality. Why on earth did you not at least play the old version for NPR? Disturbing though it was, it invited contemplation. The juxtaposition of the horror with the lightness of the delivery appeared to me to spoof the simplistic historical accounts on which we were all raised. Censorship is not what's going on here. NPR isn't preventing the Firesign Theater from working. They just chose not to carry a piece that they felt was not working. I regret to say that I feel the same about all of the recent NPR pieces. You guys have done a lot of truly great material, but not lately. |
