||||||||| Tweeny leaves at 8:00 PM, singing "Oh, I'm just a little fishy, floating in the sea, and there ain't no hook that's smart enough to catch the likes of me..."
||||||||| Catherwood strides in with a trumpet, plays a fanfare, and proclaims "Nine PM on Thursday, October 02, 2025 - I now declare alt.comedy.firesgn-thtre's chat officially open!" -- then he looks around at the empty room, looks at his watch, and mumbles "...am I early?"
||||||||| Catherwood stumbles in and announces "Presenting 'Tweeny', just granted probation at 8:00 PM", then leaves hurriedly.
||||||||| Outside, the 8:00 PM downtown bus from Funfun Town pulls away, leaving DJTweeny coughing in a cloud of diesel fumes.
||||||||| Catherwood leads Deputy Dang in through the front door at 8:00 PM, picks up his cues (only slightly scorched), and heads for the billiard room.
Deputy Dang: Howdy, Tweeny!
DJTweeny: Howdy, Dang :)
||||||||| Catherwood enters the room, strikes a gong, and bellows "THE TIME IN NEW YORK IS 11 O'CLOCK", then silently exits.
||||||||| Catherwood enters with cease close behind, mutters something about disrupting his 8:00 PM tree-stunting plans, and scurries off to the sitting room.
DJTweeny: Still almost 100 today down here
||||||||| Catherwood interjects: "Scene 3 - Take 600"
DJTweeny: allo cease
cease: Hi all
||||||||| Catherwood enters with Beet close behind, mutters something about disrupting his 8:00 PM tree-stunting plans, and dashes off to the anteroom.
||||||||| llanwydd sneaks in around 8:00 PM, trying to avoid Catherwood because of last month's "unpleasant incident."
Beet: Good Evening.
cease: Wore my winter coat for the first time today
llanwydd: howdy folks
Deputy Dang: Howdy, cease! Howdy, llanwydd! Howdy, Beet!
Beet: Hi, llan, cease, Deputy, Tweeny.
cease: It's Howdy Chatter Time
DJTweeny: Hey Beet, llan
llanwydd: won't need my winter coat this year
Beet: How cold is it in B.C, Cease?
cease: I was wearing formal clothes to an event at a university i'm invovled with, and it was cold and raining hard
cease: in the 50s, but with wind and rain, felt much colder. needed heaster in the car
llanwydd: I used my heater I would cook like an egg
cease: tihs is canada. we're heater people
Beet: llan, your message came to me instead of Cat. The private message thing doesn't work.
Deputy Dang: it was a one eyed one horned flying purple heater people!
llanwydd: cat got it too
llanwydd: that happens
Beet: OK.
DJTweeny: eet: llan, your message came to me instead of Cat. The private message thing doesn't work. << Merlyn was never able to figure out why that was happening :/
DJTweeny: Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't
cease: i'
Deputy Dang: It doesn't work. I didn't get llan's message to Cat that Beet got.
cease: i'm in 2 places at once
cease: this sounds like a party line.
Deputy Dang: Maybe. Are you llan trying to send a message to Cat? If so, yes--I got it.
||||||||| "8:00 PM? 8:00 PM!!" says Catherwood, "Muttley should be here by now...oh, THERE you are!" as Muttley enters and sits in the comfy chair.
DJTweeny: haha, no I was sending it to you ;)
DJTweeny: Hi Muttley
Deputy Dang: Howdy, Muttley!
Muttley: Hi-ho Tweenerino!
cease: mutt
Beet: Hello, Mutley.
Muttley: Hey Deputy, Beet, Llan and The Catmaster
cease: as you may know Austin, Ossman, to a lesser extent Bergman and not at all Proctor were way into "Indians"
cease: Austin and I became friends from that shared interest.
cease: he was very knowledgeable about north west coast "indian" cutures
cease: anyway,i was at an event at Capilano University where I sponsor a yearly award in my daughter's name.
cease: the dean spoke first, and acknowledging the university is in the territory of various first nations, said, we are on the land of gift giving cultures.
Muttley: I knew the chief of the Piscataway tribe a long time ago. His name was Turkey Tayac. Great man.
Muttley: That’s very cool, Cat.
cease: the nations were so rich around here, their cultures were based on giving stuff to other tribes and shairing wealth amongst the tribes
cease: i hadn't thought of that bfore, but Austin could have pointed that out to me.
cease: the potlatch ceremonies, among others.
Muttley: Yes, potlatch. Also the The intentional destruction of wealth
cease: yes
cease: there was so much salmon and other food that everyone was rich.
Muttley: Always found that fascinating
cease: my twin grand daughters, Caira and Shiya, just started at UBC. my alma mater. they play the sister comedy act Philomena and Petra in my plays
DJTweeny: kewl
cease: the young grils who escaorted me to my car inthe rain were barely older than my grand dsaughters. Weird
Muttley: Congrats on having two very smart grandkids!
cease: one girl said, "im amazed your still strong enough to drive a car" i dont' think that was a joke
cease: i accept your congrats, mutt
Muttley: It wasn’t. They all think we’re fragile oldthings.
cease: i'm deteriorating rapidly. doc ordered a bunch of tests the other day
cease: unfortunatley, i referred to my family doctor, not doc tech.
Beet: Sorry to hear that, Cat.
Muttley: Hey, tests are good things. Scary, but good. Knowledge is power.
||||||||| Tweeny leaves at 8:00 PM, singing "Oh, I'm just a little fishy, floating in the sea, and there ain't no hook that's smart enough to catch the likes of me..."
cease: by tween.
||||||||| Gusts of wind blow in from outside and the thumpa-thumpa-thumpa of helicopter blades is heard as Happy Panditt's chopper lands on the lawn and Tweeny disembarks at 8:00 PM.
cease: yeah i look forward to finding out.
Muttley: Tween split the scene nearly unseen
Tweeny: I'z, back!
Tweeny: and beautiful!
cease: and beautiful?
cease: too late
Muttley: It will turn out ok. I’m at that stage myself. Bloodwork every three months, a battalion of docs, but what am I going to do?
cease: far too many firesign fans are in our situation. not much new blood infiesign land
Muttley: Like the lady in Canada said to Groucho on the street, “Don’t die, just keep living!”
cease: good advice
Muttley: He thought so XO
cease: you know the story of procotr and penn?
Beet: The major thing recently was the hernia operation. Pretty much healed now.
Muttley: Nope
Muttley: Ouch, Beet! Those hurt like hell
cease: when bergman died, penn told the story. then when austin died, he told it again. the story is, when he was following proc/berg around, proctor told him to learn everything.
cease: sorry to hear of that, beet
Beet: It was very painful at first.
Muttley: I’ll bet
cease: so when penn told that story twice for bergman and austin's obit, i asked him what wil he say when proctor, the author of the statement, dies>
cease: penn said, "proctor just can't die"
Muttley: Exactly.
Beet: great tune.
cease: pain is to be avoided
Beet: Not alot of fun.
||||||||| Catherwood interjects: "You guys are nothing but a pack of cards."
Muttley: Proc said it- Pain may just be God’s way … of hurting us
cease: lol
Deputy Dang: He's not wrong.
Muttley: No he’s not
cease: if the concept of "god" appeals to you
Beet: Makes you wonder, doesn't it?
Muttley: I like the concept of dog
Deputy Dang: It appeals to me as much as it appeals to Penn.
cease: more of a cat man myself
Muttley: No problem. All are equal in the suffering of life
||||||||| Catherwood interjects: "May I see your passport, please?"
cease: sounds like buddhism, mutt
Muttley: All life IS sorrowful. So, whaddaya gonna do?
cease: i lived in a buiddhist country for a long time.
Beet: Give Me Immortality Or Give Me Death.
||||||||| Catherwood interjects: "There's one crawling up my leg!"
cease: asa someone famous once said, i was a buddhists before i went to japan (19th century dude)
Muttley: Just lean towards the good is my deal. I vote for less cruelty and suffering
cease: someone at the event this morning asked which i preferred, and i said, canada, but they wree very different cultures
Muttley: Binary Beet!
cease: indeed,mutt.
cease: inmy new play, i'm riffing on "all my relations" and the 7th generation idea.
cease: tghe relations referrred to are not the present but including the past and future. the 7th generation idea is we should act to the benefit of people 7 generations from now
cease: also, my relatiohs are all life forms and the land itself
cease: thinking a lot of first nations stuff today
Muttley: Interesting idea. And we are all interconnected in a deep and profoundly fundamental way
Muttley: Not necessarily a personal connection in the sense of identity, but deeper than that.
Muttley: Team Earth
Muttley: That could all be the dope talking, tho …
cease: but wisely
Muttley: Ha!
Muttley: Why do I want to go listen to Canadian Railroad Trilogy right now? That came out of nowhere
cease: just read a book by leguin called City of Illusions, where talking animals tell humans, "dont' kill us"
Muttley: I blame you, cat
cease: i accept the blame. loved lightfoot
Muttley: Me too
cease: dylah said lgihtfood was his fave.
Muttley: I recommend that bookm highly
cease: there is a very funny lightfoot parody somewhere, forget. sctv?
cease: legiun is my fave.
||||||||| Catherwood interjects: "I see you are a sailor."
Muttley: Probably sctv. I can’t remember when, though
cease: her Lagthe of Heaven, Dispossesed and Earth Sea Trilogy are someof my faves.
cease: she told me Earth Sea was her imagining what gandalf would have been like as a young man.
Muttley: Lathe riveted me when I first read it. Amsterdam only meant one th8ng to me moving forward
cease: also that Lathe was her attempt to write a Phlip K Dick novel.
Muttley: Wow
Beet: This one of the noisier episodes.
cease: they were in the same grade at Berkely High
Muttley: How did you know her?
cease: true, beet
Muttley: It is, Beet.
cease: she came to van for a lit fetival in the early 90s. i was one of the few in the room with her,
Muttley: Wow
cease: i can also tell you my story about the dear departed jane goodall
Muttley: Pls
cease: i hacve only met a few famous people, unlike proc.
Beet: An amazing being she was.
||||||||| Catherwood interjects: "Everyone knew her as Nancy."
Muttley: She was
cease: i wa rnning the canadian chapter of the great ape projecrt and running the orangutan foundation in mid 90s.
Muttley: Holy underwear!
cease: jane was in van giving a speech and was in the room where her and some young buy were countting the monehy.
||||||||| Catherwood walks in wearing his pyjamas, yawns, and mumbles "It's midnight here in New York city"...then he falls over and starts snoring loudly..
cease: i wold have been in my 40s, the guy in his 20s and jane in her 60s and she was flirting with him.
Muttley: Lol
cease: she told him, "you're so much better than my son" who would have been about his age
cease: i was kind of embarrassed. so was the young guy
Muttley: Little Willie John!
Muttley: Sleep
Muttley: I love that somg
Beet: Gotta jump. Nice to be with you all tonight. Have a great weekend. G'Nite.
Muttley: Be welll Beet!
cease: have a good week, beet
Muttley: Anyone else still her besides us?
cease: maybe not
cease: only 2 firesigns left, only 2 fans on chat
cease: coincidence?
Deputy Dang: I'm fading. Coincidence is highly underrated.
cease: perhaps
cease: yeah, it's late where you are. i often go to bed qujite early. a little after 7 yesterday
cease: stahying up to 9 is really staying up.
Muttley: I spent years staying up to 12/1. No kore
Muttley: More
cease: me too.
cease: our bodies know what we need to do.
Muttley: I think so
Muttley: Younare grey jo kore DD
Deputy Dang: I thought I was clever. lol
Muttley: You are grey no more DD
cease: great Ukrainian novel called Grey Bees.
Muttley: Available in translation?
cease: f course. i could not read it in the original
Muttley: I asuume very little generally
Muttley: Good to know.
cease: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_Bees
Muttley: Thanks!
Muttley: There’s a new Bruce Lee bio coming out that is getting some great reviews
cease: interesting guy
Muttley: Very
cease: did you see his flick with kareem?
cease: i susbscribe to kareem's substack and he talks about bruce
Muttley: Reviews I have read say it is a lively and entertaining book
Muttley: Yes. Game of Death
Muttley: There are outtakes that survive showing Kareem and Bruce going at it full soeed. The cameras couldn’t keep up. The guys had to slow waaaay down
cease: did you see Once Upon A Time in Hollywood? character based on Bruce
llanwydd: what a celebrity he was
Muttley: No I did not. It’s on the list of flicks I need to watch
llanwydd: especially when he died
Muttley: Llan: at our ages he was all that everyone talked about on the playground. He was huge to us
cease: not a fan of tarentino but i liked that one
cease: hi llan
llanwydd: everybody was kung fu fighting
llanwydd: huge fad
llanwydd: hi cat
cease: this is even more true in japan, or was when i lived there
Muttley: Karl Douglad!
Muttley: Douglas
cease: teh conceptg of a uniform is very much more of japan than here.
llanwydd: I saw all the bruce lee films
Muttley: I first saw him as Kato in The Green Hornet. Only one season.
Muttley: Didn’t see his films until later. Enter the Dragon in 73/74
cease: i was one of the few men of a hundred or so of my age, in the university event htis morning, in formal attire.
llanwydd: I badly wanted to watch the green hornet but it was past my bedtime
cease: dont reallyu recall it.
Muttley: No! My folks let me stay up for that and Laugh-in
Muttley: Batman, too
cease: i was born in 1951. you?
llanwydd: I was old enough to stay up for laugh in
Tweeny: You may have heard that they were considering Bruce Lee for the part of Quai Chang Caine in the Kung Fu TV series, but they gave the role to David Carradine instead because Bruce Lee was considered "too asian"
Muttley: It came and went in one season, cat. Same production studio as Batman. They even did a crossover episode
cease: hi tween
Tweeny: I also watched Laugh-In first run on TV, as well as the original Star Trek :)
llanwydd: I was born in 61
Muttley: Bruce created that show
Tweeny: 54 here
Muttley: 62
Deputy Dang: 65
llanwydd: I watched star trek every thursday
Muttley: Hike!
cease: the reason i asked is i think those shows were on when i was in jr high.
Tweeny: Muttley: It came and went in one season, cat. Same production studio as Batman. They even did a crossover episode << I did not know that...
cease: i watchd tv cuz i wanted to share the experience with jr high friehds, but even then i'd prefer reading.
cease: i remember cat woman from batman
Muttley: Tween: yes. It’s great. Roger c. Carmel as Col. Gumm. There’s a fight scene bewteen batman robin green hornet and kato where Bruce is clearly holding back
Muttley: Even so, he’s f-ing flying through the air at Robin.
Muttley: Wild
Muttley: It’s a two-parter, too!
cease: wil tell you a story about nixon losing the gov electoin in 62
cease: what we were told was the best steak restaurant in lA was oddly, a norwegian place.
llanwydd: lol
cease: my family just began eating meat in late oct 62. nixon lost shortly there afdter
cease: so we went there, ate amazing steaks, and saw nixon in nearby booth
llanwydd: he was eating crow
Muttley: Lol
Tweeny: That's cool, cat
Tweeny: and haha llan :)
Muttley: I hear Austin’s Nixon in my head usually instead of the real guy
llanwydd: I saw him play nixon at town hall in nyc
llanwydd: ossman played fdr and proctor played truman
Muttley: Shit … there’s nothing on … they cancelled the f-ing football game … shit!
llanwydd: right
cease: good for you, llan
Muttley: Bergman as LBJ
cease: will send you some line next week, i hope, llan
llanwydd: cool
llanwydd: the lines you sent me are lost
cease: someone asked me which firesign would best play trump. i suggest austin
llanwydd: along with my email account
Muttley: I agree
cease: they can be resent to your new address
llanwydd: great
Deputy Dang: I never understood why that song was so popular.
llanwydd: wish I could recover the old account but I can remember none of my old passwords
cease: the play is quite intticate. am still in compositino mode
Muttley: Me either, Beet
Muttley: I mean Deputy
||||||||| Catherwood interjects: "What is reality?"
cease: beet is long gone, like a turkey through the corn.
Muttley: Brain fart
cease: japanese wine is to be avoided.
Muttley: Nippon Cadet ‘62
Deputy Dang: So long as it wasn't wet, be happy.
cease: at least it was in those days
Muttley: XD
llanwydd: sake is alright
cease: in 77, i was the private tutor for some rich people in japan. they owned a vinyard in france and gave me a bottle,it was amazing.
cease: they were relatives of the emperor so, that level of wine.
Tweeny: wow
Deputy Dang: I first had sake at a corporate event when I worked at Fujitsu in Silicon Valley. They had a machine that dispensed hot and cold sake. I was young and didn't realize that warmed wine hits a lot faster than cold.
cease: you know Sony started out as a sake brewery?
Muttley: The good stuff
Tweeny: llanwydd: sake is alright << warm sake in the winter can be good
Tweeny: I never heard that, cat
cease: my wife's freind's husband was in charge of the sony account at his agency. he was so suscessdful they gswve him a big container of sake.
cease: he ddint drink so gave it to me.
||||||||| Catherwood interjects: "You guys are nothing but a pack of cards."
Muttley: I only had it once but it was very good with the meal
cease: so i have had the sake Sony gives to its best people, and resd wine that the emperor driniks.
llanwydd: the only wine I like is too expensive for me to buy
||||||||| Catherwood interjects: "I hate rich people. I hate them and their stupid problems."
cease: both red wine and sake are amazing with appropriate food
llanwydd: the best I ever had was a 1948 yugoslavian
llanwydd: red
Muttley: Mine was with a home cooked meal by my friend’s aunt. She was Japanese and her brother was the US ambassador from Japan for a long time
cease: i basiclaly stick to rose, with frzone strawberrys
cease: you probably had the good stuff then, mutt.
Tweeny: sounds tasty, cease
Muttley: I have no idea but it was warm and went beautifully with the food
llanwydd: believe it or not it was being poured by a guy at a cast party for a play I was in and he wasnt even in the play
cease: like all spirits, there is a vast distance between good stuff and usual
Tweeny: sangria?
cease: i got into sangrai when in spain in 2002 but recent trip turned me on to Tinto Verano
cease: chesp red and lemon soda plus big slice of organge
Muttley: I haven’t had a drink since 2010. I miss it sometimes.
||||||||| Catherwood interjects: "It's like sitting in a big hand."
Muttley: It is indeed, catherwould
Deputy Dang: I haven't had any in a little over 2 years. :-/
cease: i hsve been an alcoholic since aut 16, 1971. wil quite when my body tells me to
Muttley: Mine did
Deputy Dang: Same here. That is, my body told me to quit.
cease: our bodies are wise
Muttley: TBH I have greatly benefited from stopping healthwise
cease: i didnt' expect to live to 34, much less 74. i'm amazed i'm stil alive
Deputy Dang: Not me. I haven't even seen any financial difference from not buying it when I go shopping or dining out.
cease: the longer i live, the more plays i can write. keeps me alive
Muttley: Give it time DD
Deputy Dang: more than 2 years?
cease: i'm rich enough to buy the new firesign books and they're really fuckin expensive
Tweeny: Bergman was so good at the Amos & Andy bits
Muttley: All I can say is that moneywise it adds up and heakthwise after about 4-5 years it really shows up
llanwydd: I just want to get the first two. I used to have them
Deputy Dang: Well I guess I don't have any choice but to wait, regardless.
Muttley: Try ebay, Llan. Lots of copies and cheap if you are patient
cease: i had planned to go to Istanbul and Egypt. Even began takkng Turkinsh lessons in Duolingo. Then my healtrh reminded me thatr's there no way i cuold do there alone
llanwydd: thanks, mutt
Tweeny: Thanks for listening everybody :)
cease: ww do our best
Muttley: DD: It’s the suspense that gets ya!
Tweeny: Have a great week and we'll see you next time around
Deputy Dang: great! lol
llanwydd: thanks tween and cat. see everybody next week
cease: wil do something next week.
Muttley: Thanks Tween, Cat, DD and Llan!
Deputy Dang: Thank you Tweeny! We'll see y'all next week!
||||||||| Catherwood enters the room, strikes a gong, and bellows "THE TIME IN NEW YORK IS 1 O'CLOCK", then silently exits.
Tweeny: Until last time, again...
||||||||| Deputy Dang leaves at 8:00 PM, singing "Oh, I'm just a little fishy, floating in the sea, and there ain't no hook that's smart enough to catch the likes of me..."
||||||||| Catherwood says "8:00 PM, time for SOMEONE to leave!", grabs Muttley by the collar and gives 'em the old bum's rush out the door
||||||||| Tweeny rushes off, saying "8:00 PM? Mark Time is almost on! Where's a radio?"
||||||||| "Hey DJTweeny!" ... DJTweeny turns, and sees Bradshaw approching with the handcuffs, and is dragged away, screaming "it's only 8:00 PM, I don't have to go yet!"...
||||||||| Catherwood ushers Tweeny into the room, accepts a $3 bill as a gratuity, grumbles something about 8:00 PM, then departs.
||||||||| Tweeny is thrown out the window just as the clock strikes 8:00 PM.
||||||||| It's 1:15 AM, and that means it's time to play BEAT THE REAPER! And here's how our contestants did:
||||||||| llanwydd - dead from the yaws
||||||||| Better luck next time! And now, back to our chatroom, which is already in progress...
||||||||| It's 1:45 AM, and that means it's time to play BEAT THE REAPER! And here's how our contestants did:
||||||||| cease - dead from Globner's disease
||||||||| Better luck next time! And now, back to our chatroom, which is already in progress...
||||||||| Catherwood enters the room, strikes a gong, and bellows "THE TIME IN NEW YORK IS 2 O'CLOCK", then silently exits.
||||||||| It's 2:00 AM, and that means it's time to play BEAT THE REAPER! And here's how our contestants did:
||||||||| Beet - dead from pneumonia
||||||||| Better luck next time! And now, back to our chatroom, which is already in progress...
||||||||| Catherwood ushers Tweeny inside, makes a note of the time (8:00 PM), then fades off into the distance going on about the waiting room or the sitting room or something.
||||||||| Tweeny departs at 8:00 PM, singing "Toad away, toad away; toad away, toad away! Where do you go when you're toad away?"
||||||||| Catherwood enters, and announces to all and sundry "It's 4:31 AM, time to change the log file and clean out unused rooms; please exit the chat room for a minute or two. Thank you for your patience."
