S_F_AusTween has been to the Mayan ruins in the Yucatan Peninsula, and can tell you that they are quite impressive
||||||||| cease enters at 9:04 PM as Catherwood takes their hat and goat and rushes off to the Chapeau Manger.
cease: ive written about them, but never visited them.
S_F_AusTween: Hey cease
S_F_AusTween: Has Winter arrived yet?
cease: how is austin?
cease: no snow but frosty mornings
S_F_AusTween: We're finally getting some good soaking rain
S_F_AusTween: It's going to take a lot more to make up for last summer's drought
cease: supposed to rain here all next week
cease: bummer cuz japanese freinds are coming to play golf.
S_F_AusTween: I read an article recently that said Texas has lost 10% of its trees to the drought :/
cease: thjis year? thats a lot of trees
S_F_AusTween: Golf in Canada in December??
S_F_AusTween: Yeah, this year
S_F_AusTween: It was historically brutal. The loss of crops and cattle is in the billions
cease: its amazingly snowless accross the country. maybe it all went to the states
S_F_AusTween: apparently
cease: weather is not our friend
S_F_AusTween: Well, Van is supposed to be pretty mild for Canada
cease: that's why i live here
S_F_AusTween: I'll bet
S_F_AusTween: Is Victoria Island still pretty much forest?
S_F_AusTween: Haven't been there since the 60's, but I remember camping there
S_F_AusTween: Your version of a State Park or whatever
cease: much of bc is forest
cease: some farmland up north
S_F_AusTween: kewl
||||||||| 9:12 PM: Elayne jumps out of the hall closet saying "I've been listening to all of you talking about me for the past hour!"
S_F_AusTween: Hey E
Elayne: Evenin' Tween, evenin' Cat!
Elayne: Would you believe, I'm still sick?
cease: hi el
Elayne: I was supposed to have lunch with Dex today, had to cancel, it was my first full day back at work all week.
cease: too bad about sickness
Elayne: The worst part is, I don't have much of an appetite.
cease: have you ever had pizza at dom delmarco's, el?
Elayne: That's how I know I'm sick, I'm usually a bit of a foodie (not as much as Cat is, but stil).
Elayne: I don't think so, Cat. Oh, we had our administrative staff holiday lunch today at Trattoria del'Arte, where apparently a lot of famous people dine. It was terrific.
cease: it may just be a passing fad, el
S_F_AusTween: Sorry to hear, E :(
Elayne: Being as how I'm not enamored of food. I paid for it afterward, but I'm still glad I went.
cease: most italian food is greatg
Elayne: THe admin staff lunch being the other reason I had to cancel w Dex.
Elayne: Actually I loved the food, it just didn't love me.
cease: yes, i've had more bad experiences pysically with food than good ones
S_F_AusTween: Problems with the digestive tract?
Elayne: That and this horrid cough are my two leftover symptoms, Tween. Neither is very much fun.
Elayne: I can't wait for this to be over. I hope it's done by Christmas, I'm cooking duck for Robin.
S_F_AusTween: You need to eat more Tex/Mex, build a cast-iron stomach ;)
Elayne: Which I guess it better than cooking a robin for a duck.
S_F_AusTween: Well, I hope you recover quickly
Elayne: Tween, my days of Mexican and Indian food are more or less behind me, I fear.
S_F_AusTween: No fun not being able to digest properly :/
cease: have you cooked duck before, el? i never have but have had many splendid duck dishes
Elayne: BRB, my screen seems to be frozn.
||||||||| Around 9:17 PM, Elayne walks off into the sunset...
cease: also some very bad ones
||||||||| Elayne waltzes in at 9:17 PM carrying an obsidian door knocker.
Elayne: There we are. Yes Tween, I've made duck before, I don't cook it that differently than I do other poultry.
S_F_AusTween: I'm guessing she uses Windoze ;)
Elayne: No sir, Tween, Robin doesn't allow non-Mac usage in this house. :)
cease: we are roasting chicken for the first time on xmas for visiting japanese golfers
Elayne: Sounds yummy, Cat!
S_F_AusTween: btw cease - I did finally find the old Apple laptop I was looking for, and you're reading text from it :)
cease: hope so
S_F_AusTween: Good for you, Robin :-)
cease: great, tween
cease: apparently one has to rub them with lemon before roasting. anything lemony works for me
||||||||| Catherwood enters with Principalpoop close behind, grumbles something about disrupting his 9:20 PM tree-stunting plans, and hurries off to the vestibule.
S_F_AusTween: Yeah, lemon is a great addition to many dishes
S_F_AusTween: Hey P
Elayne: Lemons go well with chicken, oranges and cherries go well with duck. I'll probably stuff oranges in ours.
cease: i should take pix if it works out.
cease: hi poop
Elayne: Robin says oranges "smell like Christmas" to him.
S_F_AusTween: interesting
Principalpoop: hi all, tangerines too
S_F_AusTween: not cranberries?
Elayne: Oranges and cigars. But I don't think I'm going to do cigar-stuffed duck.
cease: in my very ealry childhood, we'd get these "mandarin oranges" around xmas time, always in stockings. a highliight of the season
S_F_AusTween: lol
Elayne: Hey Prinpoop!
cease: later feasted on them for a long time in japan
Elayne: Yes, my father's cousins sent us some mandarins and satsumas (my favorites) and oranges this year.
S_F_AusTween: Mandarin oranges are very tasty indeed
Principalpoop: i have had chinese pancakes, almost crepes with duck meat and green onions and soy sauce
Elayne: We're braving Whole Foods tomorrow so I may pick up some more satsumas and some Meyer lemons. I think Meyer lemon duck might be a possibility.
S_F_AusTween: Whole Paycheck?
Principalpoop: i saw a recipe for chicken with chocolate, I guess you could use duck too hehe
cease: my parents had meyer lemon tree in la. i loved aslice of meyer in a cup of tea
Elayne: I'm torn between wanting to go Asian with the duck and sticking with a British recipe. I'll probably go British because I'm making it for an Englishman.
Elayne: Yes indeed, Tween. You have to shop carefully at WF.
Elayne: Damn, all this food talk, I haven't had dinner, and I'm still not hungry. This is how I can tell I'm still sick.
S_F_AusTween: I visited one in Austin (headquarters are here), and decided it was for yuppies with much money
Elayne: Granted, lunch was fairly enormous, but still. Not even a snack since I've been home.
S_F_AusTween: Great food, don't get me wrong
Elayne: Tween, it's basically for Top Chef contestants. :) :)
Principalpoop: i don't know if there is one here or not, i stick with kroger and food lion
S_F_AusTween: lol
S_F_AusTween: I use the bus and shop at Walmart ;)
Elayne: They just opened one in Yonkers, quite near a Stew Leonard's. I'm sure it's cutting into SL's business.
S_F_AusTween: where I know I will get great discounts provided by Chinese Communists
Principalpoop: i was going to ask you and llan tween, what would walmart have to do before you stop giving them money?
Elayne: We usually shop at Stop & Shop, and there's a nice place near us called Garden Gourmet which has good fruit, veg and other sundries.
Principalpoop: shoot union organizers?
S_F_AusTween: Principalpoop: i was going to ask you and llan tween, what would walmart have to do before you stop giving them money? - not be on my bus route
Elayne: Garden Gourmet is one of those "get a lot of pretty exotic stuff for cheap" places, but they don't have the real out-there stuff like WF does.
Principalpoop: oki
Elayne: I can get shiitake mushrooms at a good price there, but they won't have stuff like lobster mushrooms.
S_F_AusTween: They really have it sewed-up. Both the north and south terminations of my bus route have Walmart stores
Elayne: I think I'm going to buy a bunch of wild mushrooms at WF tomorrow, that'll be my one expensive expenditure.
Elayne: And it'll go nicely with the duck.
S_F_AusTween: Image it would be
Principalpoop: good cheese is expensive too
Elayne: Now I need a recpie for duck with wild mushrooms. :) Or I'll just make a wild mushroom and sausage dressing...
Elayne: I don't pay a lot for cheese, except maybe parma.
cease: i had a piece of arctic char cooked in paper with berries at a restaurant early this year so i thought i'd try and make it.
S_F_AusTween: I buy frozen fish fillets from Viet Nam at Wallyworld
Principalpoop: that is for recipes with cheese as a star, not a supporting role lol
S_F_AusTween: Tasty and cheap
S_F_AusTween: Might not want to visit the factory :/
cease: baked it in corningware instead of paper, with a spanish rose and 10 blackberries and 10 raspberries
Elayne: Oh, this one looks easy: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Sauteed-Duck-Breasts-with-Wild-Mushrooms-232881
Principalpoop: don't light the kitchen on fire cat
Elayne: I can just deglaze the pan after cooking the duck and skimming off the fat to use later, then make the mushroom sauce in what's left over.
cease: also a dash of galric salt and a bit of dried thyme
cease: it was superb
cease: yes you can, el
Elayne: Now I'm leaning toward this one: http://www.recipe.com/roast-duck-with-wild-mushroom-sauce/
Elayne: I don't want to use dried 'shrooms that I have to reconstitute, though - pain the arse.
cease: did any of oyu hear ossman on ksav?
cease: if ben ohmart hadnt posted it to facebook, i wouldnt have know about it. great stuff
Principalpoop: http://www.oneforthetable.com/oftt/index.php search duck in the entrees there E
cease: and it was part 2
Principalpoop: ksav? that is new one, no
S_F_AusTween: Duck a la Casteñada?
Elayne: Thanks, Cat, I'll go through http://www.oneforthetable.com/oftt/turkey-and-duck/2.html tomorrow.
Elayne: I mean, thanks Prinpoop.
Elayne: Sorry, still sick.
Principalpoop: the stories are fun even if you don't like the recipes lol
Principalpoop: i saw duck someplace else recently, grrrr brain
Elayne: I loved the line "Save the duck fat, it goes for $20 a pound!" :)
Elayne: I'm totally draining it into containers and freezing it.
cease: great ossman news, we'll eventually hear from merl
Elayne: Can't wait, Cat!
cease: new book of their old mushroom play scripts will occur
cease: called The Psychadelic Firesign
Elayne: Cool!
Principalpoop: they mentioned that a kboo, in passing
Principalpoop: at
cease: will be hip like a zip. let's take a trip
S_F_AusTween: Was listening to the recent OZ podcast with Ossman
cease: with his poems? they are suburb
cease: they are all so prolific now
cease: p
S_F_AusTween: Really glad Bergman has resurrected RFO
S_F_AusTween: Poems on the Iraq War
cease: got all their juices going
S_F_AusTween: suburb lol
cease: now riffing off each other
Principalpoop: similar to public hair
cease: we may see a new album yet
S_F_AusTween: Yeah!
Principalpoop: oh birdy take a riff on me
cease: they need publicity
S_F_AusTween: Anything they announce on Facebook, I'll share
Principalpoop: they should run for the GOP presidential nomination hehe
S_F_AusTween: Publicity is a whole different animal, these days
Principalpoop: they would have more of a chance than santorum lol
cease: ossman didnt mention the ksav show on facebook that i saw
S_F_AusTween: There might be a couple of community-oriented radio stations in Austin which would play skits.
S_F_AusTween: KGSR and KOOP come to mind
cease: they dont seem attuned to the basic publicity of letting their fans know when they'll be on somewhere
S_F_AusTween: A master mailing list/Facebook/Twitter?
Principalpoop: they need to get with it, twitter and mypage and stuff
cease: proc has his own career and the lads are more distant than together
S_F_AusTween: It's certainly technically possible
S_F_AusTween: Proc's newsletters are excellent
Principalpoop: get their voices used on some GPS system
cease: bergman seems the most publicity oriented but he need the lads
S_F_AusTween: Maybe FST can do something like that? A monthly PDF like Proc?
Elayne: Well, I'm going to try and microwave something to calm my tummy. I think I have some frozen pasta meals... be right back.
cease: he's been doing them for years
Principalpoop: bon ap
Principalpoop: get arrested for marijuana or something, all publicity is good publicity, so I hear
Elayne: Portabella parmesan risotto it is.
Principalpoop: oh yum
cease: sounds delicious, el
S_F_AusTween: FST has been sentenced by a California judge to Regrooving?
Principalpoop: Baliff whack his peepee, oops that is cheech and chong
Elayne: I like the Healthy Choice meals, Cat - proper portions, fairly low in salt, and most of them are very good. Oh, and I get 'em 4 for $10 at the supermarket when they're on sale.
Elayne: Don't really have time to cook any more except on weekends (and when I'm not sick) so this'll do for now.
S_F_AusTween: Sometimes a TV dinner and a microwave can actually be reasonably healthy
Elayne: Esactly so, Tween.
S_F_AusTween: Not what they used to be
Elayne: As long as you read the labels when you buy 'em. And stay away from Swanson. :)
cease: ive had many
Elayne: A lot of the Chinese ones are very high in salt. Sadly, a lot of the vegan ones are too.
Principalpoop: you mean my hungry man dinners are not a good idea? hehe
Principalpoop: i like the little brownie dessert
Elayne: I like to find Indian ones, they're usually reasonable salt-wise because they know how to use other spices.
||||||||| Catherwood ushers llanwydd inside, makes a note of the time (9:56 PM), then fades off into the distance going on about the waiting room or the sitting room or something.
llanwydd: good evening
Principalpoop: hi llan
S_F_AusTween: Hey LL
cease: hi lln
S_F_AusTween: I want aluminum with a piece of meat, mashed potatoes, and apple cobbler
llanwydd: having a little trouble with this. be back in a few minutes.
||||||||| llanwydd leaves to catch the 9:57 PM train to Billville.
Principalpoop: good luck
Principalpoop: and 8 green beans
Elayne: I go eat and rest now. Next week, all! Have a merry Christmas, if you celebrate!
||||||||| "9:57 PM? I'm late!" exclaims Elayne, who then dashes out through the french doors and down through the bushes.
Principalpoop: hope santa is good to you and yours
||||||||| "9:58 PM? 9:58 PM!!" says Catherwood, "llanwydd should be here by now...oh, THERE you are!" as llanwydd enters and sits in front of the fireplace.
llanwydd: that's better
Principalpoop: wb E left
llanwydd: so what's the topic tonight?
llanwydd: that's a non-sequitur
cease: you too el
Principalpoop: it was duck
||||||||| Catherwood enters the room, strikes a gong, and bellows "THE TIME IN NEW YORK IS 10 O'CLOCK", then silently exits.
llanwydd: for cover or a l'orange?
cease: she's gonna go orange on the duck
llanwydd: the room is strangely empty tonight
llanwydd: except for the four of us
Principalpoop: strange you should say strange
cease: dex suggested many people came here only to hear firesign on cni
llanwydd: that has never been my motive
cease: merl hasnt been with us for awhile
Principalpoop: not for our rapier like wits?
cease: he must ber busy. the firesign site isn't updated abuot recent radio appearances at all
Principalpoop: the weather has not gotten cold yet here
llanwydd: by the way, princ, I looked at last weeks chat and apparently you made a remark after I left that you thought it strange that I should comment on the town of Schroon Lake, NY being very cold.
llanwydd: I should explain...
Principalpoop: hehehehe
Principalpoop: up north lol
llanwydd: Schroon Lake is at a higher elevation than most of Ticonderoga, is one point...
llanwydd: but perhaps you don't have such varying elevations where you come from
llanwydd: another point I might add...
Principalpoop: oh come on, all up state new york gets coldl, elevation or not, but ok
llanwydd: is that a good part of the residential area of schroon lake is right on the lakefront, as was my home at the time...
Principalpoop: the wind off any lake will make it seem colder
llanwydd: and the wind gets rather strong by the lake which also adds to the chill in the air
llanwydd: but perhaps they don't have lakes where you come from
Principalpoop: still, you expected it to be warmer up there?
llanwydd: believe it or not schroon lake is colder than ticonderoga
S_F_AusTween: How bad last Summer's drought in Texas was - http://www.statesman.com/news/texas/texas-may-have-lost-10-of-its-trees-2041937.html
Principalpoop: it is all cold
cease: soounds like the begining of Anythinge
llanwydd: no, actually I didn't expect it to be warm up there. believe it or not that is not why I moved to schroon lake
Principalpoop: that is not good tween
S_F_AusTween: We're finally getting some good soaking rain, but it's going to take a long time to repair the damage
llanwydd: I thought I should explain these things for your benefit
llanwydd: I learned about geographical features in high school
S_F_AusTween: Your sweetheart?
llanwydd: but perhaps they don't have those where you come from
cease: very scary tween.
Principalpoop: no big deal, just like somebody complaining that it is hot in daytona...
S_F_AusTween: Yeah, it was a bad year :(
Principalpoop: florida gets hot, up state new york gets cold, don't act surprised
llanwydd: believe it or not people complain about the heat sometimes in daytona
Principalpoop: killing me
S_F_AusTween: Texas Summers are generally pretty brutal, but this last one was something out of Rod Serling
Principalpoop: i blame it on Perry, or Bush
Principalpoop: Elect a democrat Governor lol
llanwydd: actually, princ, I didn't act surprised. I said schroon lake gets pretty cold
llanwydd: by the way, princ, its spelled "schroon", not shcroon.
llanwydd: I learned to spell in middle school but...
Principalpoop: you know the lake I am talking about, but ok, you are right llan, your words make perfect sense
llanwydd: anyway, getting back to the subject of duck...
Principalpoop: i still don't know how to reply to the news that schroon lake gets pretty cold
llanwydd: believe it or not, there is no need to reply.
Principalpoop: roanoke gets cold sometimes too
S_F_AusTween: Much respect for this lady - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ann_Richards
llanwydd: I don't know how to reply to that
Principalpoop: i don't either
S_F_AusTween: -- "You're talking about a party that says, "The country's going to hell because women don't stay home and take care of the kids". You're talking about a party that says, "The country's going to hell because women don't get out and work." -- Anne Richards, former Governor of Texas referring to the Republican Party on Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect
Principalpoop: richards was wonderful
||||||||| Catherwood ushers H Stones inside, makes a note of the time (10:14 PM), then fades off into the distance going on about the waiting room or the sitting room or something.
cease: duck and cover, the san francisco treat
cease: hy stones
llanwydd: she looks like barbara bush
S_F_AusTween: omg
llanwydd: and barbara billingsley both at once
H Stones: HAIL

S_F_AusTween: Hail and Well Met, Stones
Principalpoop: tell llan he does not know what he is talking about stones hehe
